STUDIO GUIDE

Step off the path...into a world of creativity.

The Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador invites you to step off the path and into a world of creativity.

The work of each person listed has been juried by their professional peers, our guarantee of the finest quality.

What is a Studio?

A studio is the creative working space(s) of an artist or craftsperson.  Studios come in many varieties and this guide uses a simple designation system to indicate what you will find when you reach your destination. No matter what type of studio it is, if it's listed in this guide, visitors are welcome.

Please follow the suggested visiting hours provided with each listing.

  • Home Studio
Many studios in the province are inside the artist’s or craftsperson’s home—some have separate entrances, some do not.

  • Working Studio
These studios are separate from the craftsperson's home—perhaps in the backyard or in a completely separate location. Most of this space is used in the creation of work. As in home studios, you can buy work from these locations—they simply have no distinct display area.

  • Studio with Shop/Gallery
A working studio plus a gallery or retail shop.

  • Artist-run gallery or shop
These are listings for an artist's or craftsperson's sales location from which they operate; however, creation of their work may occur in a separate location.

  • Cottage Industry
A central sales outlet for the craftwork of a group of people who work from home. Sometimes work is assembled at the cottage-industry location and displays or demonstrations may also be on view. Knit and duffle products are often produced this way.

  • Economuseum
Part of the network of ECONOMUSEUM businesses in Eastern Canada. Economuseums have six components which include production and creation workshop, interpretation, contemporary collections, documentation centre, reception area and boutique.

Purchasing Art and Craft

All price ranges in the listings are in Canadian dollars; most venues accept only Canadian currency, some shops may accept US currency. Each listing indicates if a studio or sales venue accepts major credit cards, debit cards or cheques. Visitors should expect that most studios in this guide are required to charge 13% Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) for in-province purchases.
