Florence Mansfield Niven
Born and raised in Newfoundland, Florence Niven now calls Kingston, Ontario her home. Her background is in Graphic Design and Florence worked for many years as a freelance designer and illustrator.
In 2000, Florence took a stained glass course that completely changed the focus of her work. She slowly replaced her paint brush with a glass cutter, and now works full time as a glass artist - cutting, layering and fusing glass together in a high temperature kiln.
The challenge of working with glass is recognizing the restrictions of the medium while maintaining the integrity of a strong design. As most of her work is dimensional, she strives to find ways to support the layers of glass without adding too much bulk to each piece. Florence’s background in graphic design allows her to pare down each design to the most important elements, producing a final art piece that is clean and precise. The patterns that she uses for both her jewelry and also her large framed pieces are all her original designs. The same amount of care goes into each design and every piece that leaves her studio is unique.
