Alexis Templeton
Potter Alexis Templeton lives and works in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador—a province that continues to inspire her work through its strength, endurance, and beauty.
She opened her first studio in 1990, which became the “Pottery Workshop” on Military Road. She has been producing functional work in evolving styles ever since, all of which reveal her affinity for the natural world and draw on her knowledge of glazing techniques.
In 2004, she opened a new studio and office at 75 Quidi Vidi Road, transforming the Pottery Workshop into Alexis Templeton Studio Inc.
Alexis is drawn to the technical and creative challenges of working in clay. “I deeply enjoy throwing a form on the wheel, the alchemy of glazing—and creating pieces I know people will use every day,” she says.
Her work has developed within four main styles: Rose-and-blue stylings, Saltfish motifs, Crystalline-glaze finishing, Mussel-shell designs and patinas. A graduate of Memorial University (BA, BEd), Alexis received her ceramics and design training through courses and workshops.
She signed up for her first pottery lessons (with Isabella St. John) in 1988, attended her first Craft Fair in 1991, and started teaching pottery courses herself the same year. She continues to learn and teach. Alexis also gives back to the community that has supported her by serving on committees of the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador, and was a driving force behind its Studio Guide project.
