INNOVATIONS

The Gallery endeavours to include innovative presentations for its audiences. It is committed to the installation, presentation and interpretation of works in the environment for which they were designed:

In Praise in Function (2005) a transformed the Gallery to reflect the home environment. Displays were also presented during a home builders convention at the Rooms and at the Fine Craft & Design Fair.

Presentation of Self (2002) a solo show by artist Bonnie Leyton illustrated the gallery’s interest in presenting ideas using innovative approaches with craft as a medium. Video, sculpture and photographs were used to discuss issues of body image. Presented in partnership with Eastern Edge Gallery.

Craft for or about the Garden(1998) presented at the Gallery and at the Memorial University Botanical Gardens allowed pieces to be viewed in an environmental context.

BOATBUILDING: Celebrating the Outport Craft(1997) saw the creation of a full size dory (Newfoundland fishing boat) from start to finish in the Gallery. It was launched in the ocean at a public event. Through its research and programming, this exhibit strengthened relationships with other cultural institutions in the community. A portion of this exhibit is now part of a permanent display at the Port de Grave Fisheries Museum.

BODYWRAP (1995, 1997) offered a vibrant textile community the opportunity to showcase their works of art to wear during a performance event with contemporary dancers and musicians.
