ABOUT the GALLERY

The Craft Council Gallery is committed to the preservation, presentation and appreciation of craft and its makers by encouraging innovation, excellence, and community involvement.

The Craft Council Gallery is located within the historic Devon House Craft Centre in downtown St. John's. The Gallery is the province's first and only exhibition space dedicated solely to the exhibition and promotion of works of craft. A minimum of eight shows are mounted each year in the main and annex galleries. Both solo and group shows are featured. Programming is developed with input from a volunteer committee comprised of craftspeople, curators, and members of the community.

The Craft Council Gallery is small but important to the community. This is a province of many rural communities where geographic isolation made the evolution of craft necessary to survival. Ties to traditional craft are strong in this province and the making of objects to satisfy both practical and artistic needs has contributed significantly to the culture.

In recent years, and in response to influences from beyond our shores, there has been significant growth in contemporary craft practices. As the only public exhibition space for craft in this province, the Gallery plays a pivotal role in the exchange of ideas relating to contemporary craft. Limited opportunities for exhibition of local work and a desire for opportunities to view work from other areas, were other critical factors in the establishment of the Gallery in 1991.

The Craft Council Gallery at the Devon House Craft Centre:
  • is a subsidiary of the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador, a charitable, incorporated organization, overseen by a provincially representative Board of Directors
  • occupies a space of 600 square feet in the Devon House Craft Centre with an extra 450 sq. ft. in an adjacent annex space
  • has shown the work of over 300 craftspeople, including guest exhibitors from other provinces in Canada, and from other countries
  • promotes its exhibitions through direct mail, media and a network of cultural connections
  • has established creative partnerships with community groups and institutions
  • has shown a dramatic increase in visitor numbers, including tours from schools and other organizations
  • has received support for its exhibitions and programming from a variety of sources, including government agencies, private businesses, the Gallery Patron program, the Friends of the Gallery program and the Craft Council itself. The support of those who volunteer their time and those who purchase work from gallery exhibitions is vital to the Gallery’s growth and gratefully appreciated. For more information on the Friends Program download the Friends Brochure from the left hand menu.
  • is open 7 days a week. Admission is free.
