FOCUS on YOUTH and EMERGING ARTISTS

The Gallery allows students to experience the excitement, pride, and critical views which result from showing their work to the public in a professional space. The Gallery has hosted student exhibitions, provides opportunities for group tours, initiates artist-in-the schools projects, and offers youth workshops and other programming related to current exhibitions.

Projects/exhibits which show a commitment to education and youth include:
  • Speaking Out of Turn: Young Upstarts on the Make (2007): a newly formed Craft Council Youth Committee presented this exhibit of young Newfoundland talent as part of a month "Craftember" celebrating youth works.
  • Annual Members' Exhibit 2005: A summer program offered tours and activities for children in conjunction with this exhibit.
  • What We Wear (2003): A resource kit including a video and curriculum ideas for level 5 students providing opportunities to discuss important social and cultural issues.
  • A Gift of Thought (2000): with guidance from artist Elayne Greeley, high school students created unique boxes which were sent to community leaders to emphasize the importance of art in society.
  • The Osaka Work featured student work from Japan and gave the community an opportunity to meet the curator, Nick Webb from Nova Scotia, to discuss his art education experience in Osaka.
  • 2000 STARS: A project featured with our 1999 Christmas exhibit Heavenly Hosts and a Host of Heavenly Gifts involved students from across the province in the creation of 2000 stars which celebrated the new millennium and the creativity in every child.
  • AVERTOK - Place of the Whales (1999): work of professional artist Di Dabinett and emerging Labrador artists resulting from an “Artist in the Community” project sponsored by Canada Council for the Arts.
  • HOME (1998): six “artist in the school” projects initiated by the Gallery which resulted in a student exhibit from across the province
