In conjunction with the Craft Council, the Gallery maintains a small permanent collection of traditional and contemporary works with a focus on pieces created in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Gallery has initiated research in areas relating to exhibitions such as The Newfoundland Table. The catalogue accompanying the exhibition features an essay by Gloria Hickey that addresses the works, as well as the history of ceramics in the province. Research relating to Boat Building and Knitting, as well as pertinent historical or social issues that affect artistic expression or craft production in the province has also been undertaken.
Many of the works in our exhibits are for sale and provide unique additions to the collections of the corporate & private collector. Works featured in our shows range from highly individual explorations in wood, metal, glass, fibre and clay to carvings and textiles that are rooted in the craft traditions of our people. Historically, objects were created by hand to meet essential needs and to fill our living environments. Today, contemporary works play an important role in enriching the lives of those who collect. Today, collectors of craft value the role played by contemporary works in enriching their lives. |
