Carolyn Morgan

Carolyn Morgan is best known for her one-of-a-kind art dolls and historic figures, crafted from clay and wood and dressed in costumes of her own design and creation. She has also exhibited her paintings—landscape, floral, or abstract—as well as rugs, fabric-collage wall hangings, and unique enameled copper pieces. Her work has appeared in numerous shows at the Craft Council Gallery, as well as at the Provincial Art Gallery, Memorial University Botanical Gardens, and Art Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Art Exhibits—and she is a published writer.

Morgan grew up in St. John's and earned B.A. and B.Ed. degrees from Memorial University. She taught English and Special Education in St. John's for nearly 30 years, and won a Prime Minister's Award for teaching excellence in 2002, the year before she retired. During her teaching career she pursued her love of art by taking courses and workshops—in a variety of mediums—from such artists as June Bowden, Luben Boykov, Sid Butt, Ilse Hughes, Julia Pickard, Gerald Squires, and Jean-Claude Roy, whose joyful use of colour particularly inspires her.

“All my work,” Morgan notes, “is about communicating ideas, moods, stories, history, culture—real or imagined. I believe that all creative forms feed each other and that the study of one medium of expression can transfer to and enhance another. The medium in which I choose to create my work is dictated by the way the inspiration is revealed: my vision might best be expressed in a painting, a fabric creation, a sculpture, a written story, or a mixed-media work.” Her work continues to evolve.

Carolyn Morgan is the co-chair of the Friends of the Craft Council Gallery, and serves on the Craft Council Gallery Committee. She is a member of the Visual Artists of Newfoundland and Labrador (VANL), the Art Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (AANL), and the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador (WANL).
