The natural world is an important source of inspiration for Stephanie. “I feel fortunate to be living next to the ocean, in a part of the world that is rich in colour, texture, history and light. Inspiration comes easily from the patterns in the tidal pools, the whales that feed just off the beach, the many varieties of seabirds and the many changing colours of sea and sky.”
Stephanie lives in St. Michael's, on the Southern Shore of Newfoundland. She is a graduate of the Textile Studies program at College of the North Atlantic, where she received the President's Award for Academic Excellence (2000).
In her recent work, Stephanie explores the combination of natural fibres and dyes made from traditional plant and insect sources. Objects gathered on the beach in front of her house - rocks, driftwood, even odd bits of flotsam may end up in her studio for contemplation or incorporation into the design. A variety of techniques can be found in any one piece: hand and machine embroidery, weaving, photography and digital imaging.
“The passage of time, as it is written in nature, is a source of endless fascination” and often forms an underlying framework for her work.
