Jay Kimball
When Jay Kimball arrived in St. John's in August 2003, he immediately became a member of the Craft Council Clay Studio, “I instantly recognized the studio as a space where I could exercise my creativity as an artist and work as an instructor.” Previously, Jay had been living in Regina, Saskatchewan and before that, a farm boy. Currently, Jay is the Coordinator of the Craft Council Clay Studio.
Jay studied visual art--with a focus on sculpture--and urban geography at the University of Regina, during which Jay began business ventures that employed him as both an artist and a craftsman.
Jay takes public commissions and participates in gallery exhibits, as well as creates custom furniture and dinnerware for clients. His work focuses on function, space and design and the primary materials in which he works are clay, wood and stone, “I try to create forms that are technically challenging and which require a long list of steps to creation.” He finds that by remaining true to his process unique details can emerge from his pieces to create one-of-a-kind artworks.
His most current accomplishment is a 2006 Arts & Letters prize for Visual Art.
Works by Jay Kimball can be viewed at the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador and The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery.
