Anyone who has purchased a “Burnt Island Bear Original” from the studio-workshop of Mary Hood will agree… it will become a very special companion in short order! All of her creations are safe for the very young, and are comforting for the young at heart.
“Burnt Island Bears had its beginnings on Exploits Island, nine miles out to sea amongst the beautiful and peaceful islands of Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland”, says Mary. “Every summer we return to the old family salt box house, warmed by the wood stove and lit by soft lamplight. In the summer of 1987, at the request of my young daughter and some snipping and stitching, our first baby bear was born. Upon seeing it my father exclaimed, “Well, well! A Burnt Island bear!” You see, the old name for Exploits Island was Burnt Island, hence the name.”
Since then, there have been many additions to Mary Hood's animal family. Today, her product line includes beavers, hedgehogs and several different rabbits. Fairies, mermaids, jesters and limited edition designs for special celebrations are popular with children and collectors. These “critters” have been inspired by children's stories and by the children themselves. Each toy is designed, hand or machine sewn and dressed by Mary with particular detail to the face and presentation.
You can find a “Burnt Island Bear Original” at several craft shops throughout the year, at Mary's Devon House Studio and at the annual Craft Council Christmas Craft Fair. If you plan to attend the fair, plan to come early. Burnt Island Bears are in high demand!
