Judy Cooper

A native of St. John's, Judy Cooper has been sewing since she was ten years old. Since retiring from a successful teaching career, she has channeled her energies into designing and creating fabric pictures. While her themes are centered around Newfoundland seascapes and landscapes, she also designs other non-traditional quilted pieces.

Judy often first captures the scene by photograph, which helps generate ideas while she works. She then selects fabrics from her collection and starts to create. She happily says, “quilters usually have lots of material hidden away for rainy days”. She enjoys experimenting with dyes and uses her own dyed fabrics, as well as using digital printing onto silk fabric to create a desired look. She also makes use of commercial fabrics, machine quilting, free motion stitching, hand sewing and embroidery. Each piece created is one-of-a-kind, numbered and signed.

One of Judy's larger pieces, “Voyages of Discovery”, is presently hanging in Bristol, England and was exhibited previously at the Williamsburg Quilt Festival in Virginia, USA.
