Originally from our province's ancient French capital, Placentia, Karen Coleman has lived in St. John's since 1987 with a few nomadic years in the mix. To her, living here is truly a blessing…a magical place where she finds herself inspired, always, by its gentle ruggedness.
In 1993, Karen received a B.F.A. (SWGC), followed by a B.Ed. (MUN'94). Having taught art for the following six years, Karen decided that making art was where she needed to be. A collection of Karen's work may appear to be the work of a dozen different artists, as she loves to jump from medium to medium with erratic changes in style.
Intricately detailed portrait drawings, large bold oil paintings, funky woodcut prints…all have influenced her most recent obsession – clay. Working primarily, now, in porcelain, Karen incorporates her love of drawing, sculpture, carving, and painting into one-of-a-kind functional artworks.
Wine goblets to Wish Bottles, vessel-style powder-room basins, Karen's goal in the creation of each object is to make each one whimsical and unique, with the hope that they will elevate the most ordinary moments into memorable, meaningful ones. She welcomes customizing each piece, transforming them into heirlooms to be part of your history.
