Two Craft Councils, 40 Years
2012 is the 40th Anniversary of the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador. In trolling around for inspirational ideas on how we can best celebrate and highlight this significant milestone, the website of the United Kingdom’s Craft Council came up.
To celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2011, they commissioned 6 artists to select items from their permanent collection and create an artistic response to them. The results are varied and surprising. From tactile objects of craft sprang poems, videos, and soundscapes.
Some craft objects resonated with more than one artist, allowing us a glimpse of the varied ways the same article of craft can touch the artistic soul.
As you reflect on the significance of 40 years in our local craft community, take a browse through the UK Craft Council’s website, and stumble upon a similar vision and direction as experienced across the pond.
