Michael Massie Recipient of the Order of Canada
The Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador is proud to offer congratulations to MICHAEL MASSIE for another outstanding accomplishment! Michael was recently made a member of the Order of Canada for his work as a silversmith and sculptor.
Since 1991, Michael has created exceptional fine craft objects that are outstanding for their beauty, originality and humour. In addition, he is an ardent spokesman for Inuit artists in Canada and professional craftspeople in his home province. Massie’s work is increasingly acquired by public institutions for their permanent collections and national tours. In June 2006, a ten-year retrospective exhibition was held at The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery. Reflecting on the acquisition of “unit-tea” National Art Gallery curator Christine Lalonde says it “crosses many categories. It can be displayed in our silver collection, in our contemporary galleries or in our Inuit galleries. It fits in each place.” Michael Massie’s fine craft objects have redefined Inuit art and the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador salutes his contribution to excellence in Canadian craft.
The Craft Council Gallery has been honoured to include Michael’s work in past exhibitions. You can see more of Michael’s work at Spirit Wrestler Gallery, Vancouver.
