Professional Skills Development
Aimed at assisting people in the craft, gift, and apparel sector to improve their design, production, and business skills.
Short-term training opportunities (workshops, courses, and seminars of up to six weeks) and mentorship arrangements are eligible for support, whether the applicant is hosting the training or taking it.
Eligible costs include:
- workshop, professional, and mentor’s fees
- travel and resource materials
- equipment and facility rental
Design and Product Development
Supports design consultation, research, and prototype development,
as well as the sourcing of new materials, equipment, and technologies.
The goals are to help producers and organizations:
- develop marketable products
- respond to changing market trends
- collaborate to develop relevant site-
specific products for cultural, historic,
and environmental venues
Projects can help you explore possibilities, or create specific products to fit a new business opportunity.
Eligible costs include:
- designer fees
- travel and resource materials
- equipment rental
Market Development
Market development can help by sending you to local, national, or international events—to exhibit or to gather market information.
It also supports the development of new or improved marketing tools, such as photography, promo materials, packaging, booth displays, advertising, and web sites.
And retailers* can apply here for help to improve merchandising and displays (including shelving, lighting, and display fixtures), on-site signage, point-of-purchase materials—even to hire a merchandising consultant.
Eligible costs vary depending on the project.
*Craft retailers who have been in business for 1+ years
and have significant sales of products from this province.
Sector Development
This component supports organizations undertaking activities that benefit the industry as a whole.
Organizations that can apply include guilds, Womens’ Institutes, regional arts councils, museums and heritage associations, tourism boards, economic development organizations, craft councils, and other similar groups.
The CIDP can support a variety of projects under this heading, including organizing events and conferences, providing training opportunities, developing new audiences, conducting industry research, and commissioning critical writing to promote craft and craft exhibitions.
Eligible costs include:
- training, event, and conference delivery costs
- professional and event management fees
- travel and production costs
- facility rental

How do I apply?
Submit a written application to your Economic Development Officer (EDO)* at least four weeks before you must make a commitment to the project. Your EDO can help you with the application process. Application forms and full program criteria are on the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development’s web site:

Is my craft work reviewed?
First-time applicants must have their work assessed by the INTRD Product Review Committee, which meets at least four times a year.

I’m just starting my business—am I eligible?
If you have produced a product, you can apply to the program.
I only work at my craft part-time—can I apply?
Certainly.
Can I apply more than once?
Yes. You may apply whenever you have a project that needs CIDP support. You are encouraged to submit a yearly application for all applicable projects, but this is not a requirement.
Do I have to repay the money?
No. The CIDP provides non-repayable contributions of up to 50% (or more) of your project’s eligible costs, depending on the program component and the project details.
When does the support come?
After the activity or project is completed and you have submitted a final report and claim, funds for approved costs are reimbursed.
